The short answer
CISSP, CISM, CISA and CCSP are four of the most respected certifications in information security, but they suit different careers:
- CISSP (ISC2) proves broad security expertise across eight domains. It suits security architects, engineers, consultants and managers.
- CISM (ISACA) proves you can manage an enterprise security programme. It suits security managers and future CISOs.
- CISA (ISACA) proves you can audit information systems. It suits IT auditors, assurance and compliance professionals.
- CCSP (ISC2) proves cloud security expertise. It suits cloud security architects and engineers.

Which one should you take?
| If you are… | Take | Then consider |
|---|---|---|
| A security engineer or architect | CISSP | CCSP for cloud depth |
| A security manager aiming to be CISO | CISM | CISSP, then CISO training |
| An IT auditor or internal auditor | CISA | ISO 27001 Lead Auditor |
| A cloud architect or DevSecOps lead | CCSP | CISSP |
| A risk or compliance professional | CISA or CISM | ISO 27001 Lead Implementer |
Not enough experience yet? You can still sit the CISSP or CCSP exam and become an Associate of ISC2 while you build the required experience. ISACA allows you to pass first and apply for certification within five years.
CISSP, CISM, CISA or ISO 27001?
These certifications prove individual expertise. ISO 27001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor prove you can build or audit a certified information security management system. Many professionals combine both: for example CISA with ISO 27001 Lead Auditor, or CISM with ISO 27001 Lead Implementer. Read our guide to the ISO 27001 family of certifications.
Frequently asked questions
Which is harder, CISSP or CISM?
CISSP covers a wider range of topics, including technical areas. CISM is narrower but tests management judgement in depth. Most candidates find CISSP broader and CISM more scenario-driven.
Is CISSP or CISM better for becoming a CISO?
CISM is designed around security management, so it maps closely to the CISO role. Many CISOs hold both.
Do I need experience before taking the exam?
You can take the exam first. Without the required experience, ISC2 grants Associate status for CISSP and CCSP, and ISACA lets you apply for CISA or CISM within five years of passing.
How long are the exams?
CISSP and CCSP are adaptive exams of 100–150 questions in 3 hours. CISM and CISA have 150 questions in 4 hours.
Should I take CCSP or CISSP first?
If you work mainly in cloud security, CCSP is directly relevant. If you want the broadest recognition, start with CISSP; a CISSP certification also meets CCSP's experience requirement.
Is training available online?
Yes. WiseLearner runs live, instructor-led online batches for CISSP, CISM, CISA and CCSP, plus corporate batches for security teams.
