Environment and social responsibility are now board issues
Customers, investors and regulators increasingly ask organisations to prove how they manage environmental impact and social responsibility. In India, the largest listed companies report through SEBI's Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), and global buyers push the same expectations down their supply chains. Two ISO standards help organisations respond:
- ISO 14001 sets requirements for a certifiable Environmental Management System (EMS).
- ISO 26000 gives guidance on social responsibility, the "S" and much of the "G" in ESG.
ISO 14001:2026: what is new
A revised edition, ISO 14001:2026, was published in April 2026, with a 36-month transition. ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid until April 2029 at the latest. As reported by certification bodies, the main changes are:
- Alignment with the harmonised structure used by ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001
- Climate change formally built in: organisations must assess whether it is relevant to them and consider interested parties' climate-related requirements
- Environmental aspects now consider upstream and downstream impacts across the life cycle
- A new clause on planning changes to the management system
- Expanded guidance in Annex A
