ITIL Certification Path 2026: ITIL 4, ITIL 5 and Every Module Explained

ITIL certification in 2026: where to start

ITIL is the world's most widely used framework for IT service management. Today there are two live streams. ITIL 4, the version most employers still list in job descriptions, and ITIL Version 5, which reframes the framework around digital product and service management and adds guidance on ITIL and AI. This guide explains every ITIL course WiseLearner offers, how they fit together, and which one to take next.

The short answer

  • New to ITIL? Start with ITIL 5 Foundation, or ITIL 4 Foundation if your employer or client specifically asks for ITIL 4.
  • Already ITIL 4 Foundation certified? Upgrade with the short ITIL 5 Foundation Bridge.
  • Working in IT operations? Add a focused Practitioner module such as Incident or Problem Management.
  • Aiming for Managing Professional or Strategic Leader? Take the Specialist and Strategist modules below.

ITIL Foundation options

ITIL 4 Practitioner modules

Practitioner modules certify one practice in depth. They are short, focused and ideal for operations teams. Each requires ITIL Foundation (or the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition certificate) and has a 30-minute exam.

Module Practice
Incident Management Restoring normal service quickly and handling major incidents
Problem Management Finding root causes and managing known errors and workarounds
Service Desk Running an effective, user-focused service desk
Service Request Management Handling pre-defined user requests efficiently
Monitoring and Event Management Observing services and responding to events
Monitor, Support and Fulfil (MSF) All five of the above in one Specialist course, 60-question exam

If you need several operations practices, MSF is usually better value than taking the individual modules.
