Lean Six Sigma Green Belt vs Black Belt: Which Should You Choose?

What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma combines two improvement approaches. Lean removes waste: steps, delays and handoffs that add no value. Six Sigma reduces defects and variation using data and statistics. Together they give a structured, team-based way to make processes faster, cheaper and more reliable, in manufacturing, IT services, banking, healthcare and almost any other industry.

Both levels follow the DMAIC method: Define the problem, Measure current performance, Analyse root causes, Improve the process and Control the gains.

Which belt should you choose?

  • Start with Green Belt if you are new to Lean Six Sigma, want to improve processes in your own area, or will work on projects part-time.
  • Go straight to Black Belt if you already run improvement projects, have good data skills, or are moving into a full-time process excellence or quality role.
  • Many professionals take Green Belt first, complete a project, then progress to Black Belt.

Lean Six Sigma and other frameworks

Lean Six Sigma works well alongside management system standards. It provides the improvement engine for the "Improvement" clause of ISO 9001, and its tools support root-cause analysis in IT service management. For quick workplace improvements, see our post on the 5S methodology, and for deeper root-cause analysis, our post on the 5 Why analysis.
