NIS 2, NIST CSF, GDPR DPO and CISO: Cyber and Privacy Compliance Certifications

Why cyber and privacy compliance skills are in demand

Regulators now expect organisations to prove they manage cyber risk and personal data properly. The EU's NIS 2 Directive widened cybersecurity obligations to many more sectors, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 added a new Govern function, GDPR continues to set the global benchmark for privacy, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act now has rules in force with a phased rollout. Someone has to lead all of this, and that is increasingly the CISO.

This guide compares four WiseLearner courses that build those skills: NIS 2 Lead Implementer, NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer, GDPR Data Protection Officer and CISO.

The four courses at a glance

NIS 2 Lead Implementer

NIS 2 is the EU's strengthened cybersecurity law for "essential" and "important" entities in sectors such as energy, transport, banking, health, digital infrastructure and ICT services. It requires risk-management measures, management accountability, supply-chain security and strict incident-reporting timelines. Indian IT and services firms with EU clients are often pulled into NIS 2 through their contracts. The 4-day course teaches you to build a compliance and cybersecurity framework that meets these requirements.

NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework is the most widely used cybersecurity framework in the United States and beyond. Version 2.0 organises cybersecurity into six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover. The course teaches you to plan a cybersecurity strategy, assess programmes and controls, and manage incidents using NIST guidance.

GDPR Data Protection Officer

GDPR applies to any organisation that handles the personal data of people in the EU, wherever the organisation is based. The course covers the regulation, regulatory bodies, data protection principles, individual rights, accountability, security and breach notification, data transfer rules and enforcement. It prepares you for the DPO role or for running a privacy programme.

India's DPDP Act: the DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025, and most obligations for data fiduciaries apply from May 2027. GDPR knowledge transfers well, because many DPDP concepts (consent, data principal rights, breach notification and security safeguards) follow similar logic.

CISO

The CISO course is for professionals stepping into security leadership. It covers how a CISO sets strategy, manages risk, ensures regulatory compliance, leads incident response and reports to the board. It ties together the frameworks above.

Which course should you take?

Your situation Recommended course
Your organisation or clients fall under NIS 2 NIS 2 Lead Implementer
You align security to the NIST framework or serve US clients NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer
You handle EU personal data or are preparing for India's DPDP Act GDPR Data Protection Officer
You lead, or will soon lead, a security function CISO
You need a certifiable security management system ISO 27001 Lead Implementer

Many organisations combine these with ISO 27001, which provides the management system that NIS 2, NIST and GDPR controls fit into. See our guide to the ISO 27001 family of certifications.

Frequently asked questions

Does NIS 2 apply to companies outside the EU?
NIS 2 applies to entities providing services in the EU. Suppliers outside the EU are often affected indirectly, because EU clients must manage supply-chain security and pass requirements down through contracts.

What is new in NIST CSF 2.0?
Version 2.0 added a sixth function, Govern, which covers cybersecurity strategy, roles, policy and oversight, alongside Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.

Does GDPR training help with India's DPDP Act?
Yes. The DPDP Act is a separate law with its own rules, but many concepts overlap with GDPR, so GDPR training gives a strong foundation for DPDP compliance work.

Is the CISO exam open book?
Yes. The CISO certification exam is open book: 75 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, with a 70% pass mark.

Which comes first, ISO 27001 or NIS 2?
They work well together. ISO 27001 builds the management system, and NIS 2 adds legal obligations such as incident reporting. Many organisations implement ISO 27001 first and map NIS 2 requirements onto it.

Is training available online?
Yes. WiseLearner runs live, instructor-led online batches for all four courses, plus corporate batches.
