PRINCE2, PRINCE2 Agile, MSP and P3O: Which Certification Do You Need?

The PRINCE2 family: projects, programmes and PMOs

PRINCE2 and its sister methods form one of the world's most widely used families of project and programme management frameworks. PRINCE2 manages individual projects, PRINCE2 Agile blends that control with agile delivery, MSP manages programmes of related projects that deliver strategic change, and P3O sets up the offices that support them all. This guide explains how the four fit together and which one suits your role.

The four courses compared

Course Manages What you learn Best for
PRINCE2 Foundation & Practitioner Projects Principles, practices (formerly themes), processes and tailoring to the project Project managers, coordinators, team leads, PMO staff
PRINCE2 Agile Foundation & Practitioner Projects delivered with agile Combining PRINCE2 governance with Scrum, Kanban and agile behaviours Project managers and teams working in agile environments
MSP Foundation & Practitioner Programmes Programme principles, governance themes, vision, blueprint, benefits management, stakeholder engagement Programme managers, business change managers, senior managers
P3O Foundation & Practitioner Portfolio, programme and project offices Designing, implementing and re-energising a PMO; tools and techniques PMO managers, PMO staff, portfolio and governance leads

Each course combines the Foundation and Practitioner levels, with both exams included. Foundation proves you know the method. Practitioner proves you can apply it to a scenario.

PRINCE2: the current edition

PRINCE2 7, the current edition, reorganises the method around five integrated elements: principles, people, practices, processes and the project context. The former "themes" are now called practices, and it adds more emphasis on people, sustainability and digital and data management. If a course or study guide still refers to the 6th edition, check that you are preparing for the current exam.

PRINCE2 or PRINCE2 Agile?

  • Choose PRINCE2 if your projects follow a staged, plan-driven approach or your organisation requires PRINCE2 governance.
  • Choose PRINCE2 Agile if your teams deliver with Scrum or Kanban but your organisation still needs project-level control, reporting and governance.

PRINCE2 Agile is especially popular in India's IT services sector, where agile delivery teams must report into structured client governance.

PRINCE2 or MSP?

A project delivers an output, such as a new system. A programme coordinates several projects and business changes to deliver a strategic outcome and its benefits, such as a digital transformation. Project managers take PRINCE2; programme managers and business change leaders take MSP.

Where P3O fits

Portfolio, programme and project offices (PMOs) give governance, reporting, assurance and support across all change work. P3O shows how to design the right office model for your organisation and make it deliver value instead of paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PRINCE2 and PMP?
PRINCE2 is a process-based method that tells you how to run a project. PMP is a certification from PMI that tests broad project management knowledge and experience across predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. Many project managers hold both.

Do I need PRINCE2 Foundation before Practitioner?
Yes, Foundation (or an accepted equivalent such as PMP or IPMA certification) is required before PRINCE2 Practitioner. WiseLearner's course covers both levels.

Is PRINCE2 Agile better than PRINCE2?
Neither is better; they suit different environments. PRINCE2 Agile is for projects delivered with agile methods that still need PRINCE2-style governance.

What is MSP used for?
MSP (Managing Successful Programmes) is used to manage programmes of related projects and business changes that together deliver strategic benefits.

What does P3O stand for?
Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices. It guides organisations in setting up and running effective PMOs.

Is training available online?
Yes. WiseLearner runs live, instructor-led online batches for PRINCE2, PRINCE2 Agile, MSP and P3O, plus classroom options in Hyderabad and corporate batches.
