Three roles that make Agile delivery work
Agile teams succeed when three things are in place: someone who keeps the team working well, someone who decides what is most valuable to build, and the engineering practices that get working software to users quickly and safely. WiseLearner's Certified Agile Scrum Master, Certified Agile Scrum Product Owner and Certified DevOps Master courses cover exactly these three roles.
The three courses compared
| Course | Role | What you learn | Best for | Exam |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certified Agile Scrum Master (CASM) | Facilitates the Scrum team | Scrum values and principles, the Scrum framework, roles, events and artefacts, servant leadership | Scrum Masters, team leads, project managers moving to Agile | 40 questions, 60 minutes, online, no prerequisites |
| Certified Agile Scrum Product Owner (CASPO) | Owns product value | Product Owner role, managing the backlog, planning and tracking, complex projects, adding business value | Product Owners, business analysts, product managers | 40 questions, 60 minutes, online |
| Certified DevOps Master | Builds the delivery pipeline | DevOps adoption, planning and design, development and deployment, operation and scaling, tools | Developers, operations and release engineers, technical leads | 50 questions, 120 minutes, 65% to pass |
Scrum Master vs Product Owner
The two roles are complementary:
- The Scrum Master looks after how the team works. They facilitate Scrum events, remove impediments, coach the team and protect it from disruption.
- The Product Owner looks after what the team builds. They own the product backlog, prioritise work by value, and represent customers and stakeholders.
If you enjoy coaching people and improving how teams work, choose Scrum Master. If you enjoy defining products and making value-based decisions, choose Product Owner.
Where DevOps fits
Scrum organises how a team plans and delivers in short iterations. DevOps makes the delivery itself fast and reliable through collaboration between development and operations, automation, continuous integration and delivery, and monitoring. The Certified DevOps Master course covers the full life cycle, from DevOps adoption through to operation and scaling, and includes tools training.
Scrum or SAFe?
Scrum is ideal for a single team or a few teams. When many teams must work together on one product or solution, organisations often adopt the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), which adds roles and events such as Agile Release Trains and PI Planning. See our SAFe certifications guide and the AI-Empowered SAFe 6.0 courses.
Recommended paths
| Your goal | Path |
|---|---|
| Become a Scrum Master | CASM, then SAFe Scrum Master for scaled environments |
| Become a Product Owner | CASPO, then SAFe POPM |
| Lead DevOps transformation | Certified DevOps Master, then SAFe DevOps |
| Manage agile projects with governance | CASM, then PRINCE2 Agile |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience for the Scrum Master certification?
No. There are no prerequisites for the Certified Agile Scrum Master course or exam.
What is the difference between a Scrum Master and a project manager?
A project manager typically plans and controls the project. A Scrum Master serves the team, facilitating Scrum and removing obstacles, while the team plans its own work with the Product Owner.
Can I take both Scrum Master and Product Owner?
Yes. Many professionals take both to understand the full Scrum team. The CASM course includes a free course option, including Certified Agile Scrum Product Owner.
What does the DevOps Master exam cover?
DevOps adoption, planning and design, development and deployment, operation and scaling, and end-of-life, in 50 multiple-choice questions over 120 minutes.
Should I learn Scrum before SAFe?
It helps. SAFe builds on Scrum at team level, so Scrum knowledge makes SAFe courses easier to follow.
Is Agile training available online?
Yes. WiseLearner runs live, instructor-led online batches for all three courses, plus corporate batches.
